Reviewing the GB battery connections queue: how much of the 83 GW can we see?

Britain's connection queue is mid-reform. Connections Reform has taken the battery queue from over 170 GW to 83.2 GW of Gate 2 places, and NESO is issuing those offers now.

But, registers have not caught up. A register records a project as Gate 2 only once the developer accepts the offer.

Working out what that queue looks like is now very difficult. The TEC register is out of date. NESO has published a total for each zone and named no projects.

Developers know their own offers but nobody outside the system operator can see the queue they are all competing in.

NESO is still issuing the offers behind that 83 GW based on status (i.e., protected phase 1, phase 2). Phase 1 covers projects needed by 2030, and Phase 2 covers projects needed between 2031 and 2035. Phase 1 offers are going out now, and the last Phase 2 offers do not close until March 2027.

This piece tries to answer two questions.

  1. How much of that queue can we identify?
  2. If the proposed connection fee under CMP470 arrives, how many projects could be priced out of the queue?
