​New to Ko? This guide walks you through the basics: what Ko is, how to open it, and how to find your way around. By the end, you'll know enough to start asking questions and getting useful answers.

What is Ko

Ko is Modo Energy's AI-powered analyst, built right into the Terminal. Across market discovery, deal underwriting, and asset operations — Ko works alongside you and cites every answer back to the knowledge built by Modo Energy's power market experts. It's designed to help you make well informed decisions - quickly.

Think of Ko as an intelligent coworker - an analyst in your team. Instead of opening several index pages and piecing the picture together yourself, you ask Ko a question in plain language and it answers, with the data sources cited.

What to ask Ko

The fastest way to learn how Ko works is by starting to use it. Here are some examples of basic queries you can use to see how Ko responds.

• Market explanations — "How does the GB ancillary services market work?"
• Data queries — "What were BESS revenues in Australia's National Electricity Market last month?"
• Comparisons — "How do BESS revenues in ERCOT compare to Great Britain?"
• Definitions — "What is FCAS?"
• Asset questions - “Which assets are outperforming the Modo Energy index in ERCOT recently?”

Then ask follow up questions, just like you would with a co-worker.

​Tip: You can always ask Ko about itself and its capabilities. Try asking Ko “What can you help me do?”

How to use Ko: a quick tour

This section walks through the Ko panel and the main things you'll do when you first start using it.

Two ways to open Ko:

Ko has two modes, designed for different ways of working:

Full-page experience— Click ‘Home’ to open. Ko opens as a full-page experience with your conversation history in a sidebar. Use this when you want to have a longer conversation, explore topics in depth, or refer back to previous chats.

Side panel experience— Click the arrow on the sidebar. Ko opens as a panel on the right side of the Terminal. Use this when you want to ask quick questions while keeping your current page visible. It's helpful for getting context on what you're looking at without losing your place.

Both modes have access to the same capabilities. The only difference is how the interface is displayed.

To switch to the full-page experience, simply click back to ‘Home’.

Starting a new chat

Open a new chat by clicking the ‘+’ in the top right corner. Starting a fresh chat for each new topic keeps your answers focused, and it's also the most efficient use of your token allowance (more on that below).

Viewing chat history

Ko keeps track of your chats and you can access them by clicking the ‘History’ icon.

Viewing sources for answers

Ko shows the Modo Energy data and research behind its answers. Scroll to the bottom of a chat and click ‘Sources’ to view the underlying Modo Energy source.

Giving feedback

After each Ko response, you'll see feedback options:

• Thumbs up — the response was helpful and accurate.
• Thumbs down — the response wasn't quite right or could be improved.

If a response isn't quite right, try rephrasing your question or being more specific about the market or time period. Still not getting what you need? Use the thumbs down. Ko is still learning, and your feedback helps us make it better.

​Checking your token usage

Ko uses tokens to process your questions. To check your usage, hover over the donut chart in the top right corner of the Ko panel. It shows as a percentage (for example, "10% tokens used").

A few things worth knowing:

• Not all queries cost the same. Longer, more complex questions draw more from your allowance than simple ones.
• Conversation length matters too. The longer a chat runs, the more each follow-up costs. Starting a fresh chat for a new topic is the most efficient way to use your allowance.
• Allowances scale with your plan. Free gives you a base allowance to explore Ko, while Pro, Business and Enterprise plans extend token allowance significantly. Speak to our team about upgrading if you need higher token limits.
• If you hit your limit, you'll see a message in the Terminal. Limits reset daily and weekly.
