MISO Buildout Q3 2026: 9.8 GW of BESS is expected by 2031
If historical pass rates, queue delays and zone caps hold, 68 GW of new generation would be expected to come online in MISO by 2031. BESS reaches 9.8 GW and natural gas 23 GW, with new builds peaking in 2028 as ERAS projects are slated to come online.
MISO North takes all of the above approach: 93% of the BESS, anchored by the Illinois and Michigan procurement targets, 78% of the solar and half of the gas. MISO South builds gas, 47% of the natural gas buildout, primarily for new data center commitments across Entergy territory.
The majority of new capacity for both technologies comes through MISO's fast track, the Expedited Resource Addition Study (ERAS). The rest, including wind and solar, graduates from MISO's standard queue, the Definitive Planning Phase (DPP).
