Germany Battery Buildout Report: Capacity growth hits record high in 2025
Germany Battery Buildout Report: Capacity growth hits record high in 2025
Germany added 842 MW of battery capacity in 2025, pushing the total grid-scale battery fleet to 2.4 GW by year-end. This was the strongest year of BESS buildout the market has seen, nearly doubling 2024's deployment. Energy capacity grew even faster in percentage terms, rising by 1.6 GWh to reach 3.5 GWh total.
The pipeline shows 3.4 GW of projects scheduled in 2026, but actual delivery may fall short of these projections as grid connection timelines delay commercial operations dates. However, larger gigawatt-scale projects and growing interest in co-location opportunities can bolster battery storage growth in the coming years.

Key takeaways:
- Germany added 842 MW in 2025, nearly doubling 2024's 450 MW deployment and pushing the fleet to 2.4 GW with an average duration of 1.5 hours.
- Pipeline projects suggest 5.7 GW by the end of 2026, but actual delivery will likely fall short due to grid connection delays
- Two-hour systems now dominate new builds, with a growing number of 4-hour projects announced
Installed battery capacity reached 2.4 GW at the end of 2025
Germany's battery fleet reached 2.4 GW of rated power by the end of 2025. At 842 MW of new capacity, this was the strongest year of buildout the market has seen, nearly doubling the deployment from 2024.
The pace of deployment slowed over the summer, after several large-scale projects boosted Q1 buildout. Q4 delivered about 260 MW of new capacity, with the 100 MW Arzberg/Wunsiedel battery coming online during the quarter.
Energy capacity hit 3.5 GWh by year-end, up 1.6 GWh from the start of 2025. This was the first time Germany added more than 1 GWh of energy capacity in a single year.
Average battery duration continued its climb as more longer-duration batteries were added, reaching 1.5 hours in Q4 2025. Duration has been rising steadily since late 2022, when the fleet averaged 1.1 hours.
Germany's pipeline points to 5.7 GW by the end of 2026
Germany's battery pipeline reached a total 9.5 GW by the end of 2025. About 5.6 GW of projects are scheduled to come online through 2026 and 2027. If delivered on time, the country's fleet would hit 8 GW of rated power and 16 GWh of energy capacity by Q4 2027.
Modo Energy projects buildout pipelines by factoring in projects registered in the official registry MaStR, as well as announced projects that have reached a Final Investment Decision or an announced commercial operations date.
