Spain BESS buildout Q3 2026: Development accelerates

Spain's announced BESS pipeline is now 10.3 GW through 2029. From the total announced pipeline, 6.4 GW have authorisation permits appearing in the Boletín Oficial del Estado (BOE).
Compared with September 2025, when only 600 MW of projects had authorisations in place, this is a tenfold increase in a year. Meanwhile, stands at only 239 MW.

Key takeaways

  • Spain's announced BESS pipeline through 2029 is 5.5 times the 1.87 GW recorded in September 2025.
  • Authorised capacity has grown more than tenfold since September 2025, up from 600 MW
  • Average announced duration has stretched to roughly 3.8 hours, from 2.66 hours in September 2025.
  • Co-location has overtaken stand-alone, reversing the 1.53 GW to 981 MW split of September 2025.

More than half of the pipeline is now authorised

The Boletín Oficial del Estado (BOE) records grid connection and environmental authorisations. Projects holding one make up 6.4 GW, or 62% of the pipeline through 2029.

The remaining 3.9 GW rests on announcements alone, so it carries materially higher attrition risk. Those projects surface through funding resolutions from IDAE and FEDER, Spain's national energy agency and the European Union's regional development fund, plus regional bulletins and company statements.

In September 2025 we called 5 GW by 2029 an upper bound for the whole Spanish market. Authorised capacity alone now exceeds that ceiling by 28%.

Why have Spanish developers converged on four hours?

Four-hour systems account for 52% of the 8.5 GW where developers publish duration. That beats the two-hour and three-hour bands combined.
