SPP: How much do batteries earn from capacity contracts?
Average prices for capacity contracts in SPP have hovered between $3 and $5/kW-month for most of the past five years. New batteries in the RTO are clearing well above that range.
The first grid-scale batteries in SPP have secured $8-10/kW-month from capacity contracts, roughly twice the $4.7/kW market average.
Read on to find out how these bilateral contracts are forming the fixed-income foundation for new energy storage projects in SPP.

Four of NextEra Energy’s storage projects came online in SPP in 2025 through the Surplus Queue. These projects are receiving monthly capacity payments from Oklahoma Municipal Utility, the Western Farmers Electric Cooperative, and Google.
Prices range from $7.98/kW-month for Breckinridge to $9.69/kW-month for Minco II. These batteries contract with Google Energy LLC, forming the beginning of NextEra’s partnership with the hyperscaler announced in December 2025.
Woodward sells capacity to Oklahoma Municipal Power Authority at $8.89/kW-month. Skeleton Creek’s hybrid Facility contracts with Western Farmers Electric Cooperative at $9.55/kW-month. These power purchase agreements serve each utilities’ Resource Adequacy requirements
All four agreements bundle BESS with co-located wind or solar assets: a popular strategy emerging as developers benefit from the accelerated Surplus queue.
Early hybrid project transactions are priced nearly twice as high as the market median, tracking an $8.8/kW-month average compared to the $4.7/kW-month market average.
