Germany Battery Buildout Report: Germany adds 888 MW in 1H 2026, more than all of 2025

​Germany added 888 MW of grid-scale battery capacity in the first half of 2026. That is more than the whole of 2025, and it took the fleet to 3.4 GW.

The pipeline of self-reported planned operations dates says the second half will be bigger still, with another 3.2 GW scheduled before the end of the year. That growth is unlikely since it would require an unprecedented increase in buildout speed: Germany has never built more than 900 MW in a half-year, and the registry has overstated near-term delivery every year in the past. A six-month slip across the pipeline is the more realistic path, and that still gets Germany to 15.2 GW by the end of 2028.

Germany matched the 2025 full year of buildout in six months

888 MW arrived across 92 units in the first half of 2026, more than all of the additions across 2025 at 842 MW. Energy capacity grew faster. The fleet added 1.8 GWh to reach 5.7 GWh, the largest half-year increase on record.

This increase in deployment looks like a step-change - doubling deployment speed compared to last year. But this is not impossible given the historical context: projects coming online now got their grid connections two years ago, when the German market first started heating up.

Germany's connection queue was still open on a first-come, first-served basis, and the first applications breezed through without much of a queue backlog. Developers who applied then are building now. Construction takes 12 to 18 months, so the 2024 cohort lands across 2026. But the current wave says very little about what a developer applying today can expect - or whether the pace will keep increasing forever.

Projects also get bigger: one cluster explains a quarter of the additions. Münch Energie energised five sub-units at Beuna and Krumpa in Saxony-Anhalt with a combined 250 MW, built in about six months on a former lignite site. Taking the five sub-units together, this is now the largest operating battery installation in Germany.

Pipeline projects point to deployment speed doubling again over the next few years

The pipeline of registered projects shows a further 3.2 GW of projects with a planned commercial operations date (COD) before the end of the year, bringing capacity to 6.6 GW. But looking at historical deployment speeds, this is highly unlikely: the largest-ever quarterly addition was around 500 MW in Q1 of 2026. Tripling that record quarter and doubling installed capacity by the end of the year is almost impossible. Especially the fourth quarter of each year often shows a lot more projects registering their planned CODs, indicating that some of the end-of-year planning is optimistic bookkeeping.
