October 2026 GB BESS pipeline update: connections reform pushes dates later

The Modo Energy GB BESS pipeline has been updated for October 2026 and is available on the terminal.

It follows our Q3 2026 buildout report, which covers the batteries already operating. Connections reform has pushed connection dates later. 6.5 GW of the projects in our Q2 2026 pipeline now expect to connect at least six months later. With the same wider market conditions, slower buildout would mean higher revenues for the batteries that do come online.

The pipeline holds 217 projects, totalling 20.7 GW. Find it in the Terminal, or ask Ko which projects are due in Q4 2026. You can also download the full pipeline, including projects on our radar, at the end of this article.

We matched many projects to three public sources:

  • The Transmission Entry Capacity (TEC) register is NESO's list of transmission connection agreements.
  • The DNO Embedded Capacity Registers list distribution connections.
  • The Renewable Energy Planning Database (REPD) is the government's record of planning and build status.

This gives a clearer view of connection dates and build status. However, it relies on accurate matches, and the registers can be out of date.

This is our best estimate, built by combining many public data sources. Some of those sources are out of date or incomplete, so the matching will contain errors. If you spot one, please email shaniyaa@modoenergy.com.

In the latest pipeline, 19.5 GW is expected to connect by the end of 2029, of which 1.3 GW could slip past 2029. 8.7 GW of it comes from 19 large sites of 300 MW or more. The largest is Fidra Energy's 1,400 MW Thorpe Marsh in Yorkshire, followed by Statera's 680 MW Carrington in the North West.

Four more sites hold 500 MW each. They are Eccles (Matrix Renewables), Devilla (Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners), Coalburn 2 (Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners and Alcemi) and West Burton C (Fidra Energy).
