Future Energy Scenarios 2025: What’s changed and what it means for energy developers

The National Energy System Operator (NESO) has released its Future Energy Scenarios (FES) 2025, outlining how Great Britain could reach net zero by 2050. This year’s update reflects a step change in policy direction, led by the Clean Power 2030 Action Plan, and introduces new assumptions around electricity demand, flexibility, and delivery risks.

Electricity demand in 2050 is now projected to be up to 17% higher than in last year’s FES, driven by faster electrification and lower expectations for energy efficiency. That creates new opportunities and pressure on infrastructure and project timelines, especially for technologies like battery storage, wind, and solar.

FES isn’t a forecast. It’s a set of plausible pathways. At Modo Energy, we compare these scenarios with our own market-based forecast to highlight where assumptions align and where real-world deployment may diverge.
