Netherlands BESS buildout Q3 2026: four hours stand-alone will become the default
The Dutch BESS fleet has 677 MW / 1.5 GWh operational. It averages 2.2 hours in duration. Most are co-located: 25 of its 34 named projects share a grid connection with a wind farm, a solar park, or a thermal power station. That is why Dutch batteries sit where the renewables are. Flevoland holds the most at 168 MW across six sites, followed by South Holland and Zeeland.
But the future Dutch battery fleet looks very different. The 28 projects in the pipeline average 3.7 hours and 115 MW, and 91% of their capacity is standalone. Together they add 3.2 GW / 12.0 GWh by 2029, taking the Dutch fleet to 3.9 GW.
Standalone four-hour batteries will become the Dutch standard, and they are going where the grid has room rather than where solar and onshore wind are. Groningen currently holds 11% of the Dutch BESS fleet and 46% of pipeline projects by MW.
Key takeaways
- Four hours is the new default: 85% of pipeline MW sits in projects of four hours or longer, because TenneT bills the connection, i.e. power, rather than the energy flowing through it.
- The average project grows to over 100 MW as of 2027. This is the size required to connect to TenneT's grid that offers a Time-Dependent Transport Right (TDTR) discount.
- The BESS buildout shifts from co-located to standalone: standalone takes 91% of pipeline capacity, compared with 28% of the operating fleet in 2026.
- The tracked pipeline reaches 3.9 GW by 2029, and 5.2 GW counting projects with no announced COD. TenneT assumes 6.8 GW of large-scale and co-located battery capacity by 2030.
Why are Dutch BESS getting bigger and longer?
Two things are making a four-hour BESS the default.
The first is Capex. Modo Energy's 2026 Capex survey finds a four-hour BESS costs 22% more than a two-hour one in 2026, down from a 38% premium in 2024. That 22% buys double the duration, double the energy throughput and higher revenues. Over the first eight months of 2026, Modo Energy's Dutch day-ahead benchmarks were and , 77% more.
