DUoS charges 2026/27: what is the value for battery energy storage?

Distribution Use of System (DUoS) charges can result in batteries either paying, or being paid, for connection to the grid. For a battery dispatching into the red band and charging overnight in the green band, the net annual position depends on how the net import/export charge compares with the fixed capacity charge on the connection.

In 2026/27, a battery optimising around DUoS charges and connecting at high voltage would be net positive in four of the fourteen distribution network regions. Across all fourteen regions at high voltage, based on one cycle per day, the net position ranges from £9.8k/MW/year in South Eastern to a cost of over £58k/MW/year in North of Scotland, making location the dominant factor.
