GB BESS buildout Q1 2026: fleet reaches 7.2 GW

Seven batteries came online in Q1 2026, adding 397 MW and 744 MWh to the GB fleet. Total capacity reached 7.2 GW and 11.75 GWh.

Delays due to connections reform could reduce the buildout of storage of battery energy storage by 2.4 by end of 2029. Without delays, Modo Energy projects 22.8 GW by end of 2029. With delays, the base case falls to 20.4 GW. The pipeline sits at 29.9 GW. Whether the market reaches 17 GW or 22 GW depends almost entirely on how quickly the connection queue resolves.

A data download of the battery energy storage project pipeline out to 2029 is available at the end of the article.
