Podcast: Carbon capture, utilization and storage with Olivia Powis

The likely reality is that hard-to-abate sectors will still produce carbon emissions by the net zero goal date of 2050. Until these sectors can fully decarbonize, alternative methods must be applied to limit the amount of carbon released by these processes. The umbrella term ‘carbon capture, utilization and storage’ or CCUS refers to the process of capturing the carbon and is another tool in the toolbox of removing carbon emissions from the atmosphere. How is this achieved?

UK director at CCS Association, Olivia Powis joins Quentin for todays episode. Over the conversation, they discuss:

  • The premise of CCS and how this technology is vital in decarbonizing hard-to-abate sectors.
  • Considerations when installing CCS infrastructure, the challenges with retrofitting and what makes a suitable site.
  • How each stage of the capture, utilization and storage process works.
  • What the UK is doing to lower risk around buildout.
  • A look at the first large-scale projects and when we might see them delivered.
