Forecasts for distributed batteries under New York's Value of Distributed Energy Resources (VDER) tariff are now available across all seven utility territories. VDER is an alternative to the wholesale market rather than an addition to it. An enrolled battery earns credits from its utility instead of trading in NYISO, and pays the delivery charges any retail customer pays.

Why it's useful

Whether you are developing a distributed project, underwriting one, or choosing between routes to market:

• Compare VDER against wholesale at the same node. Across the forecast, VDER pays a premium the wholesale route in Con Edison and Long Island territory. Upstate it pays less than wholesale.
• Model revenue net of delivery charges using optimized dispatch. Each run settles the credits and the retail delivery charges together, so the output is a net position rather than a gross credit stack.
• Understand every component of the VDER settlement. The demand reduction credit and its 10-year lock, the locational credit where a site qualifies, capacity, energy, and each delivery charge are all modeled. The peak-hour capture assumption behind the capacity payment defaults to 75% and can be adjusted per run.

How to run a VDER forecast

1. Create a forecast and select NYISO as the market.
2. Choose the utility whose territory the project sits in.
3. Enable VDER in the battery settings.
4. Adjust the peak-hour capture, and enable the locational credit if the site qualifies.
5. Run it. The output returns the settlement by year, with every credit and charge as its own line.
