MISO ERAS Cycle 5: Battery storage hits a record 32% as the fast track fills its last slots
MISO's Expedited Resource Addition Study (ERAS) allows for interconnection in months, delivering a generator interconnection agreement outside the standard queue. Cycle 5 kicked off on September 1 with 15 projects totaling 8.1 GW, tied with Cycle 3 as the largest cycle in the program.
The 45 projects assigned to the first four cycles all sat in the quota reserved for load-serving entities (LSEs). In Cycle 5, independent power producers (IPPs) hold 10 of the 15 slots and 5.2 GW of the capacity, led by NextEra with six projects totaling 2.8 GW. BESS rebounds to 2.6 GW, 32%, its highest share of any cycle. For developers, Cycle 5 fills the LSE and IPP quota, so no new entrant can follow without a withdrawal.
