European BESS Capital Markets Report: Q3 2026

European BESS Capital Markets Report: Q3 2026

Modo Energy tracked 53 deals across 14 countries in Q3 2026, covering 11.8 GW of capacity.

Great Britain (GB) led with ten deals, five of them debt closings. Germany came second with eight deals and the most capacity, at 3.5 GW. Tolls underpinned 14 deals, more than any other revenue model.

Key takeaways

  • Q3 2026 tracked 53 European BESS transactions in 14 countries: 44 financings across project finance, M&A, equity and development, plus nine offtake, route-to-market and hedging agreements.
  • GB led on deal count, Germany on capacity. Zenobē's 1,750 MW sdp energie acquisition and TotalEnergies' 789 MW Kyon portfolio, 50% owned by AllianzGI, make up 2.5 GW of Germany's 3.5 GW.
  • ING and Rabobank were the most active lenders, on five deals each, out of 39 named banks.
  • Contracted revenue underpinned most Q3 debt. Four of GB's five project financings closed on tolls, floors or hedges, and tolled projects also raised debt in Poland, Spain, the Netherlands and Italy. GB recorded it’s first battery revenue swap on Modo Energy’s FCA-regulated index.

Q3 2026 at a glance: deal count rose 39%, widening geographic coverage

The table below lists every tracked event by type, size, revenue model and counterparty.

Quarter-on-quarter, tracked deal count rose from 38 to 53 and the number of countries from ten to 14.

M&A and project finance drove Q3 deals

M&A and project finance led with 18 deals each, followed by seven equity deals and one development financing. The largest acquisitions after Zenobē were Alcemi's 575 MW in Romania and Eku Energy's 300 MW Didcot project in GB.

Nine offtake, route-to-market and hedging agreements sit outside the financing count, as they secure revenue rather than raise capital.
