Where should you build a battery in Germany? Four factors to watch

Germany’s grid-scale storage market is accelerating. With 3.7 GW already in the project pipeline until 2027, and more than 500 GW of applications in the grid connection queue, the race to build batteries is drawing in a flood of developers and investors.

The pipeline is crowded. For those building or buying projects, the critical question is: which sites can really deliver?

In a country with a single price zone but complex grid bottlenecks, market opportunities provide no clear signal.

Success comes down to knowing how to navigate grid connections, CapEx differences, and curtailment risks - factors that can turn a project into a goldmine, or stop it before it starts.

Subscribers to Modo Energy’s German Research will discover:

  • How siting decisions are made without locational price signals
  • Why CapEx steers projects north, but subsidies fail to do the same
  • How knowing redispatch patterns can help with the grid connection process
